About

The first Rosh Hashanah service was conducted at the Tephereth Israel Synagogue on September 7, 1926. This year will mark its 93rd consecutive year of serving this community.

In the early 1920's there was a movement generated to have the existing Orthodox Synagogue, B'Nai Israel join the national conservative movement. By coincidence, and perhaps as a result of the change in B'Nai Israel, many of its members formed a separate group. At that time they made arrangements to start a separate congregation where Orthodox religious services would be held. The group chose the name Tephereth Israel (The Glory of Israel) for their new congregation. July 14, 1925 the congregation received the deed to the land at 76 Winter Street, its present home.

This community has been adorned with many wonderful men and women and can be proud of its glorious past and we are looking forward to the future.

As we face difficult times where so many congregations have merged, and even closed, we strive to continue to offer a place of worship for Jewish men and women who are seeking a meaningful spiritual experience. Our services are conducted in Hebrew and parts in English, offering a more modern traditional Orthodox service.
